After departing Onset MA we transited the Cape Cod Canal, into the bay to the East, then headed North. Our original plan was to head to Gloucester MA and hop our way up the coast to Maine. NOAA had been forecasting a front to roll in bringing foul weather for several days. The day we left, Thursday, the weather was sunny with West winds and short seas. We had to be in Maine by Monday, Tuesday at the latest, or we would miss a very important appointment. If we were to get stuck in Gloucester and miss our appointment in Maine, our plans would be set back by weeks. By the time we were nearing Gloucester we recalculated time and tide directly to Maine and decided we could beat the weather front by several hours. Long story short, we said good bye to our Canadian friends, turned a few degrees East and headed for Maine. Most of the trip was in the Gulf of Maine out of sight of land so we don’t have many pictures. We did see a spectacular sunset and rise, a whale, and while I was on watch at 0130 (yes AM) a huge pod of dolphins swam around our entire boat for almost half an hour. There were at least 25-30 dolphins swimming around the boat, and the moon was so bright they shimmered every time they jumped out of the water, it was amazing! They came within a few feet of the hull and the moon was so bright you could see them darting around just under the surface of the water. Absolutely unbelievable.
Once through the canal and headed North we had almost perfect conditions to sail! We set a reefed main and full head sail then shut off the engine!! Sailing = smiles!
Five hours later the wind died. Not sailing = no smile…
We did see a whale later in the afternoon. He was a little ways off so the pictures aren’t great. We don’t know the technical term for it but you can see the spray from the whale as it crested the surface of the ocean:
You can get a glimpse of him here, it was really amazing:
Then another sunset:
Sunrise the day of our arrival in Maine, just South of Seguin Island:
Passing Seguin Island headed into the Sheepscot river:
Once inside the river we were met by Dave’s Mother, Father, Sister and Brother in law:
They guided us all the way up the river to Wiscasset:
Tanya at the helm:
Final bend in the river headed toward Wiscasset:
House on the point:
Fort Edgecomb:
Final destination for the summer, Wiscasset Harbor:
That puts us up to date, we’ll post more later as events unfold!
So exciting! I can’t wait to hear more! Congratulations!
