We departed Hampton VA Friday morning. We headed south through Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Portsmouth and into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Dismal Swamp Canal.
Departing Hampton Public Piers:
It was crazy busy in Hampton Roads between the Navy and the commercial traffic and the pleasure boaters running in front of them (no not us):
Norfolk Naval Station:
Norfolk:
Battleship Wisconsin:
Hospital Point Anchorage, Elizabeth River. Yes it’s an anchorage in front of the Naval Hospital:
Portsmouth Shipyard:
Portsmouth VA:
We arrived at our first bridge (that required opening) along with several other boats. The adjacent railroad bridge delayed their opening so we all had to congregate north of the bridge for a while:
After a short delay they opened the bridge:
Mad dash:
The bridge tender had some nice music blasting over the loudspeakers as we passed under:
From here we took a turn down the Dismal Swamp. More to follow!
As you go down the Intercoastal you will become very familiar with the bridges. Hopefully some of the ones under construction in 2000 will be completed and the old bridges removed so you can trasit faster but I am sure you will have delays. Also just let the power boats go first. They seem to have less patients than the sailboaters.
The Navy base in Norfolk is really something. Hard to believe how big the aircraft carriers are. Anxiously awaiting pictured from the Dismasll swamp
Love ya.
