Mt Hartman Bay

We are quickly getting settled in Grenada, it’s very nice here! We are still pondering our plans for the next few months. I don’t think we can just sit here; it looks like we may head for points south…all written in Jello™ of course.

I only have a few random pictures for this update. Rather than pictures I have been taking lots of videos, and in the near future I will try and patch them together. For now:

This is Mandalay, anchored in Bequia, once part of the Windjammer cruise fleet. The company went bankrupt but this ship was taken over by another company and still sails the Caribbean:

 1 Bequia windjammer (1280x960)

About the Mandalay
Mandalay is truly an historic ship. This 236-foot barkentine was built in 1923 for financier E.F. Hutton and christened Hussar. In the 1930’s she was sold to shipping magnate George Vettlesen who re-christened her Vema. Later she was put into service by Columbia University sailing over a million miles worldwide. Evidence gathered on her voyages confirmed the theory of the continental drift. For many years, Windjammer Barefoot Cruises sailed Mandalay in the Caribbean, where she established an enviable reputation for delivering joy to her guests . She had a very loyal following, with “Jammers” repeating year after year. Then in September of 2007, that world ended. Windjammer Barefoot Cruises went bankrupt, its remaining assets were auctioned off and all her loyal “Jammers” mourned.

But the Windjammer dream never died, because it was more than a company. It was a culture. And it was a fragile culture – one that had a rare balance of fun, adventure, informality and one that would-be imitators never understood. On January 18th, 2012 Windjammer Sailing Adventures purchased Mandalay, with a commitment to maintain the culture of “Windjammer”. The Rum Swizzles, crab races, story time, Bloody Mary’s, peanut butter pates, PPP parties, sleeping on deck and the playing of Amazing Grace are back, as are many of the former crew. Mandalay has been refurbished to recall her former glory. Always a favorite of Windjammer Barefoot sailors, Mandalay is welcomed back to the fleet of tall ships.

Sailing from Bequia to Carriacou:

1c Bequia to Carriacou (1280x960)

…at over six knots (top left corner of the chart plotter screen)!

1e over six kts (1280x960)

Again, I will put up a video to fill in these gaps…someday.

After checking in at Tyrrel Bay Carriacou, which is a territory of Grenada, we headed down to Prickly Bay and anchored in 30 feet of water. We popped a bottle of Prosecco to celebrate:

1k bubbly (1280x960)

Then found the dinghy dock:

There is a movie night once a week and they play movies that are just off the big screen. Kids movie first and something for the adults later:

We have been exploring the south end of the island. There is a really nice boatyard here, we may haul out and paint the bottom:

2 boat yard (1280x960)

2a boat yard (1280x960)

Prickly Bay is nice and very convenient but also very rolly. On a catamaran, the roll may not be as noticeable but on a monohull it can get very uncomfortable. We have moved to Mt Hartman Bay just east of Prickly, it’s less crowded and much more comfortable:

2c Mt Hartman Bay (1280x960)

The sun can get quite intense so we have put up our sun shades:

2d Dea Latis Mt Hartman Grenada (1280x960)

Some people we just met were nice enough to share their recent catch!

3 fresh fish (1280x960)

And there are plenty of activities at the marina here in Mt Hartman, like dominoes:

3a dominoes (960x1280)

3b dominoes (1280x960)

I think the view here is much nicer:

3c rainbow (1280x939)

3d rainbow (1280x946)

4 flowers (1280x960)

That’s it for now. We are trying to stay active and not get bored. There are lots of things to do here and it’s relatively inexpensive but it all adds up. Among the mundane activities, we are going to the Hash Runs http://www.grenadahash.com/, playing dominoes, and maybe branch out to volley ball. We will probably head to Trinidad late next month and see where the wind and tide takes us from there.

Thank You!

We are here, anchored in Prickly Bay Grenada! I know I have said it before but Thank You to everyone who helped make our trip possible. We would not have been able to do this if it were not for the incredible effort and generosity of our family and friends!

THANK YOU!

…oh and we had an epic sail today!

Cleaning up now, grabbin’ a shower, poppin’ some bubbly!!

We Made It!

We have arrived in Grenada! Well, technically it’s Grenada. We are in Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou, which is an island territory of Grenada. We are only an eight-hour sail from our next destination on the south coast of Grenada proper! We’re saving the Champagne for our next stop but we’re pretty stoked at how far we have come!!

…and as usual I found more pictures from our last stop in SV-G.

The first thing we do after arriving in a new country is check in with customs and immigration. Some people take their time checking in, others don’t check in at all. If you want to read what happens to people that don’t check in, read the June and July issues of Caribbean Compass magazine online, it’s FREE. http://www.caribbeancompass.com/

Moving on… As with finding the cruiser’s hang out, you have to find the dinghy dock close to the government office, sometimes they’re the same sometimes not. In Bequia there were at least eight or ten dinghy docks giving great access to shore, this was the main dock close to customs and immigration.

Then you have to find the government office, sometimes it’s right in town, sometimes they’re spread out all over. Consolidated government office in Port Elizabeth Bequia:

Lunch at Mac’s Pizzaria:

…which was delicious but even at 2.7 to 1 dollar it was expensive:

…we didn’t eat here but thought it was worth a mention:

1k whaleboner rest (1280x960)

We didn’t do much here other than eat, swim, walk around, and wait for weather. Eventually we got a window to move south. We had one of the best sails ever, 15 to 18 kts of wind at 120 degrees, seas two to four feet-sometimes less, ran the engine less than an hour the entire day!

Customs and Immigration are located in Carriacou Marine, which is a small, clean marina and boatyard:

After checking in with customs, and the less than cordial immigration official, we headed to the Lazy Turtle for a beer. Did I mention it’s getting really hot and humid? “just sayin.”

The beer was cold and cheap. View from Lazy Turtle:

After a couple of beers we went in search of fresh food. We found a couple of stands with great fresh stuff at reasonable prices:

We are staying here for a day then heading to Grenada on Saturday. We may head to Trinidad in September, not sure yet, it will depend on the tropical cyclone activity.

Bequia

We are still in Bequia (Beck-way) which is the largest of the Grenadine Islands. We are anchored off of Princess Margaret Beach just south of the town of Port Elizabeth. We have had fun here doing almost nothing but walking around town, eating out, swimming, and being lazy…but it’s time to move on. The boat is picked up, the dinghy secured, and we’re heading out early tomorrow morning.

We are anchored in front of Jack’s Bar on Princess Margaret Beach:

We’ve been to the beach almost every day:

Fourth of July we put up the bigger flag:

1d 4 July (960x1280)

1e (1280x960)

Whenever we stop in a new place one of the first things we need to find, after customs and immigration, is the cruiser’s hangout, indicated by the abundance of dinghys:

2 dinghy dock Fig Tree Bequia (1280x960)

In Admiralty Bay it happens to be The Fig Tree:

2a Fig Tree (1280x960)

Happy hour with Catchin Rays, Ally Cat, Dreamboat, and at least half a dozen others:

2b Happy hour (1280x960)

That’s it for now, we really didn’t do much here… We’re ready to be in Grenada and settle down for a while. Eight hour trip tomorrow and we should be in Carriacou which is part of Grenanda.
