Update

On the 22nd of March we crossed from Rock Sound Eleuthera to Highbourne Cay in the northern Exumas. Winds were very light so we had to motor sail the entire way. We passed through Highbourne Cut headed north and dropped anchor for the night. The next day we pulled anchor and headed for Allens Cay. We stayed at Allens for a couple of days, checked out the endangered iguanas, fished and relaxed.

From there we headed south to Norman’s Cay which used to be owned by a drug lord back in the 80s.

From Norman’s we headed to Black Point on Great Guana Cay. We spent several days in Black Point and further south along the island, waiting for the winds to calm down. Then from Great Guana we headed 40 miles south to Georgetown.

Halfway between Eleuthera and the Exumas this bird showed up and took a tour of our boat:

We were able to get a few nice lobsters while at Allens Cay:

Approaching Normans Cay:

Drug plane that crashed during the early 80s:

Parking ramp and runway built by the drug industry in the 70s and 80s:

We found the overgrown stairway to the drug lords house. It’s more of a compound than a house. The house and surrounding buildings looked like they were pretty nice 30+ years ago, now everything is vandalized. The property is so overgrown there was no way to take any decent pictures:

After rummaging around we took a ride up the east side of the island and into Normans Pond. Entrance:

We took a ride down this river in the south of the pond:

Someone placed conch shells in this cave, looked like a sharks mouth with conch shells for teeth:

We caught another barracuda…

We moved down to Black Point, this is the anchorage:

I went snorkeling and got some conch to put in the freezer:

Cleaning is always fun:

Beautiful shells:

Another shot of the Black Point anchorage:

We left Black Point and headed outside for Georgetown but were turned back by the weather. We turned around in eight foot waves and headed back to the west. Once back on the inside we headed south and dropped anchor for a few days. We had three beautiful beaches all to ourselves for three days.

Stingray cruising by the beach:

One of our “private” beaches:

Happy hour on the beach every night. Wine, cheese, crackers, and sunsets. We made fresh lobster and crab dip one night, mmmmm:

Crystal clear 78 degree water:

I went out looking for some edible fish but found the coral covered in lionfish:

I got 17 lionfish in about a half an hour. Booooring:

So back out looking for fish and lobster. Got one lobster on the last day of the season:

And a beautiful grouper!

We spent a few days at anchor and finally got our window to Georgetown. We have been here for a few days and will catch up as soon as we can.

Quick Update

We just dropped anchor in Georgetown Exuma, right off of monument beach. It’s been a long time since our last update and a long time since we have had internet. Just as we’re getting through internet withdrawals we are connected again. Hello rehab.

All is well and we will update with pictures in a day or two.

Rock Sound

We have been in Rock Sound southern Eleuthera for the last few days waiting on weather. Two fronts have come and gone and it looks like we will have good weather to cross to the Exumas tomorrow. Right now our plans are to depart Rock Sound at 0900 and reach Highborne Cay about seven hours later. We have stocked up on food and fuel, stowed everything we can, now we are just waiting on the weather.

The first day here it was blowing 15 to 20 knots, the second day it was 25 to 30 knots. This is the morning of the third day:

The dock in Rock Sound, Dea Latis at anchor off to the left:

Dea Latis at anchor:

It has been really warm here (not complaining) so in the evening we put the chairs out on the bow to catch the breeze, listen to some music and watch the sunset:

We finally got the pressure cooker out to try and reduce some of our cooking time. Propane is pretty scarce. This night we had loaded baked potatoes. Potatoes in the pot, “loaded” in the pan. Put some butter and sour cream on them and wow what a meal. We were just proud we used our new pressure cooker without hurting anyone. Thanks Mom!

It was breezy but warm and sunny today. We made one last trip to the grocery store then ate lunch at Pascal’s. Very nice place right on the water in Rock Sound, the food was great and the prices were reasonable also. Nice view at lunch:

There is a bar under that pavilion and a dinghy dock just to the right of it:

Fun day:

After lunch we took a walk inland to the ocean hole, a 600 foot deep hole in the middle of the island that may be connected to the ocean:

Looks like a pond with tropical fish in it, pretty nice:

And then back to the boat to get ready to leave. There has been a pair of trumpet fish hanging out under the boat since we got here. In the evening they come out and swim around:

Well that’s it for now. We are going to take a relatively slow trip down the Exuma Cays so we will probably not have internet for at least a week. We will update when we can. We are meeting up with Tanya’s Aunt and Uncle in Georgetown. Until then, our cell phones are on…

Moving On

We are in the out islands where internet signals are few and far, unless you want to pay extortion-like fees. Five bucks an hour, I’ll go without. Anyway, we were in Governors Harbor Eleuthera for over a week visiting with friends and relaxing. We are now in Rock Sound, southern Eleuthera waiting on weather to cross to the Exumas. It’s been a while so the story is kind of a blurr so I will just post some pictures.

First afternoon in Governors Harbour. We tried to capture the rays of sun shining down the clouds, didn’t come out so well but it’s nice anyway:

Beach at Governors Harbour. The town in the distance is actually Cupid’s Cay:

Governors Harbor, Dea Latis way off in the distance:

Road from Cupid’s Cay to Governors Harbor:

Library built in 1897 right across from the beach:

Another beach shot, Dea Latis waaay off in the distance. The anchoring is very poor here, the only decent spot is way out in the northeast corner of the harbor.

We went to the local bakery, the bread was still warm when we got there:

Finished grocery shopping with friends Tina and Pamela:

Governors Harbour Fire Dept:

One of the many churches:

Anglican Church also across from the beach:

Tried to capture another sunset:

We ate our lobster tails. They are thicker and meatier than Maine lobster:

On one of our trips to the beach this ray went swimming by:

The four of us went to lunch at the Beach House on the Atlantic side of Eleuthera. This was the view:

The Beach House restaurant:

Beach shot, Atlantic side:

We took the dinghy up the west coast exploring and snorkeling:

Water is beautiful but a little cool at 73-74 degrees:

Further up the coast we found this cave:

If you look at the opening inside at the top just to the left there is an owl perched on a rock:

Owl looking at me like “Uh, I work at night. Can you just leave me alone?”:

Another owl just around the corner. “seriously?”:

One more owl shot:

Dinghy anchored outside the cave:

Further up the coast we found another cave, not very deep but it was beautiful:

The water is about eight feet deep:

Looking out and down the coast:

Back at the harbor looking out at Cupid’s Cay:

Sometimes we take things for granted, like being able to eat whatever we want. I have been wanting a salad and I noticed the supply boat at the government dock. The next day I took a chance and went to the store. Sure enough they had lettuce ($2.50 a head)! I bought lettuce, one cucumber ($1.00), tomato (.85c), and with some left over carrots and green pepper I made an awesome salad! Not a big deal to most but to me it was quite an accomplishment and it was soooo good!

We left Governors Harbour on the 18th of March and headed south to Rock Sound. Along the way we put out the fishing rod and before too long, zzzzing, we hooked something:

It was a 3+ foot barracuda. Nice teeth:

I think it was more like 4 feet:

Fortunately, while pulling him up, he slipped off the hook and swam away. You should see the teeth marks on my lure!

Right now we are anchored in Rock Sound where we will reprovision and plan our route to the Exumas. There is a cold front with squalls and thunderstorms coming through. Once the front blows through we will depart for Highborne Cay Cut and then south along the Exuma banks. Internet is reported to be almost nonexistent or extremely expensive so we will update when we can.

Until then…stay warm!
