Lynyard Cay

From Tilloo Cay we headed south to Lynyard Cay and Little Harbour. We spent a couple of days anchored off a beautiful beach waiting for a weather window to cross to Eleuthera.

Tilloo Bank is a shallow bar that extends three quarters of the way across the Sea of Abaco. We tried to take a picture of the bank but it’s too long. The bank:

The beach at Lynyard Cay. Not one footprint on the beach and not a person around:

Entire beach to ourselves:

We spent the day snorkeling and exploring the island:

Water is 77 degrees, a little cool but not bad:

It’s been a while since we have been able to get rid of trash. We dug a hole and burned our paper trash then headed back to the boat for a restful evening.

More to follow…

Update

I have been jumping around a bit on the blog so I will try to catch up today. About a week ago we were at Tahiti Beach with Dirk and Nancy on Renegade. From Tahiti Beach we headed south to Tilloo Cay and anchored just north of Tilloo Bank. From Tilloo Cay we took the dinghies across to Snake Cay and toured the back country. We toured the winding river behind the cays and even though it was a cloudy day we still had a great time. We saw an eagle ray that was about 5 or 6 feet across, turtles, giant starfish, smaller rays, and some beautiful scenery.

There is a huge weather front on the way. The front will sit over us and churn for days with high winds so we had to decide where to go from here. With different interests we decided to head separate ways, which is a bummer. We have friends flying into Eleuthera in a few weeks so we decided to head south. Dirk and Nancy headed back to Hope Town which is a well protected harbor. The one downside to cruising is meeting really cool people only to have to say goodbye. I’m sure we’ll meet up again.

The water is so clear. That is the rudder and the bottom is about 12 feet down:

Beautiful sail (engine off!) from Tilloo to Lynyard Cay:

Always happy when we’re sailing:

Touring behind the cays:

Beautiful starfish:

We always make sure they go back the water quickly and stay on the bottom.

Next day we headed in different directions. Renegade heading back to Hope Town:

Thanks Dirk and Nancy for everything!

Conch Horns and Sunsets

Not only has Dirk been showing me how to catch lobster and conch but he is also a great music teacher as well. It is customary to sound a conch horn at sunset and since I did not have one, he was nice enough to show me how to make one.

Cut off the end, make sure not to remove too much:

Then practice down below:

Sounding off in Hope Town, hope I don’t lose that vein:

I have been practicing almost everyday since!

Heading South

We are just outside of Little Harbour and have decided to try and make a run for Eleuthera early tomorrow morning. There is a small weather window and it’s the only window for the foreseeable future. We will give it a try and if it’s too rough we will turn back.

We will update with pictures from the last few days when we get to our next destination, either south or back north.

Water temp is 77! We all went fishing the other day and came up with a couple of monster lobster.  Weather was overcast and very windy so we tucked the dinghies in a protected area and swam out a few hundred yards. It was a long swim back to the boat but it was worth it. And a very long wet ride back home that night!

mmmmm dinner….

Will catch up later. Hope everyone back home is keeping warm!

Tahiti Beach

We departed Hope Town yesterday and headed south a few miles dropping anchor at Tahiti Beach.

Heading south past the Hope Town Lighthouse:

You can walk at least 100 yards out into the water:

Looking back from the sandbar:

Tahiti Beach is beautiful and we are spending a couple of days here before we move south.
