Dismal Swamp 2

With the shorter days and our slower speed we knew we would not make it to the regular stopping point along the canal so we just pulled over.

This is a sliding bridge that a farmer uses to move his implements and cattle across the canal:

We tied up to the concrete on the other side from the bridge:

Nightfall on the canal:

It was cold that night and when we came out to get underway we found the boat covered with frost:

Heading south. The depth in the canal between the two locks is supposed to be six feet but we bumped bottom several times:

Just past the welcome center there is a small pontoon bridge that opened for us without calling:

Southbound again in the Dismal Swamp. South of the south lock the water was deep and wide, we had at least 10 feet of water all the way to Elizabeth City.

Arrived. Free dock, nice!

We have been talking about going down the Dismal Swamp for years and it was better than we expected. The canal was very desolate but very scenic, natural, and unspoiled. What a trip!

From here we are running south, across the Albermarle Sound, down the Alligator River and…

Getting Underway

We are in Elizabeth City NC, getting ready to get underway. Got two good days of weather so we’re running south as fast as possible. Should be in south end of Alligator River tonight. Will post pics of Dismal Swamp next time we have wifi.

It’s Veteran’s Day. Thanks to all Veterans for your service!

Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth

We departed Hampton VA Friday morning. We headed south through Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Portsmouth and into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Dismal Swamp Canal.

Departing Hampton Public Piers:

It was crazy busy in Hampton Roads between the Navy and the commercial traffic and the pleasure boaters running in front of them (no not us):

Norfolk Naval Station:

Norfolk:

Battleship Wisconsin:

Hospital Point Anchorage, Elizabeth River. Yes it’s an anchorage in front of the Naval Hospital:

Portsmouth Shipyard:

Portsmouth VA:

We arrived at our first bridge (that required opening) along with several other boats. The adjacent railroad bridge delayed their opening so we all had to congregate north of the bridge for a while:

After a short delay they opened the bridge:

Mad dash:

The bridge tender had some nice music blasting over the loudspeakers as we passed under:

From here we took a turn down the Dismal Swamp. More to follow!

Departing

We are still in Hampton VA, it’s a great place. We are in the municipal marina because it is right downtown and so inexpensive. A marina for us is between $80 and $120 a night, the Hampton Public Piers was $114 for three nights!! We thought we would be hit with another huge storm but it passed us by, oh well! We have been hooked up to shore power, watched the election with our friends Michel and Monique from SV Zen, hit the Air and Space Museum, shopped at Super Walmart, refilled our water and propane tanks, cleaned the boat, did laundry, and changed the oil in the engine. Wow what decadence!

Shopping! We split a cab with Michel and Monique to get to Super Walmart:

Zen left this morning:

We also had our first “repair”, the main topping lift block. The little sheave (pulley) disintigrated and had to be replaced:

Of course one of the screws snapped off and the holes did not line up:

Done. Now we can raise and lower the main boom again:

Oil change. This municipal marina is so great they even took our used oil:

Dea Latis:

We are planning to depart tomorrow morning and hope to be in the Dismal Swamp by nightfall.
