Two Days Sailing!

We have had two whole days of sailing, amazing! We left Quantico yesterday and rocketed down the Potomac River to St Clement’s Island. We had strong following winds and seas the entire way! We anchored on the east side of the island trying to hide from the strong north east winds. Well we did not escape the winds but the long curving sand bar to the north kept the waves out. We dropped anchor in 30 knots of winds and almost no waves. The winds howled all night but our anchor held well and so we slept well also.  This morning we dragged ourselves out of bed (Tanya was ready before me!) and got under way with the winds still howling over 30 knots and temps in the lower 40’s. As we made our turn away from St Clement’s Island the wind was gusting to about 35 knots true. Again we rocketed down the Potomac hitting over 8 knots at times with following wind and wave. As we reached the end of the river the waves were cresting at about five feet, crashing right behind/next to us. It was fun surfing the boat down the waves!  Had we been heading in the opposite direction we would have never left. We have anchored for the night in Smith Creek MD just a few miles from the Chesapeake Bay. We filled our fuel tank at the marina (ouch$), anchored out across the creek, took the dinghy in and had dinner at their restaurant, it was very good!

Tomorrow we are planning an early start so that we can take advantage of these north winds. We hope to be in Fishing Bay near Deltaville VA tomorrow and Willoughby Bay, Norfolk the next day. The winds have dropped from 30 to almost calm tonight so we will sleep well. Sorry no pictures but we have been retracing our trip along the Potomac and have not been taking pictures of the same scenery. We will be in a new place tomorrow and will pick up the camera then.

Heading South!

We departed DC this morning and dropped anchor again at Quantico. Nothing much to see that we haven’t already posted. Lots of debris in the river. We are slowly making our way south and will update again soon.

Made it!

We made it through the storm, no damage. There were a couple of boats that did not prepare and they were forced to deal with their drama in the middle of the night. A head sail unfurled on one boat during the worst of the storm. The three crew had to go out and deal with that mess in the middle of the night. It’s over for the most part, still raining but the wind is down to 10-15 kts. Temps are in the 40s here, we need to put the boat back together and get south quickly. Hope all are well elsewhere!

As Ready As We Can Be…

We are in DC waiting for hurricane Sandy to arrive. We are as prepared as we can be. We will update again after the storm.

Friends and “Other Things”

The only reason we trekked up the Potomac River was to see our friends and it was so entirely worth it. I got to see some of my old Marine Corps friends and we were able to visit with our friends further up the river as well. The other night we had dinner with three of the nicest people we could ever hope to be friends with, Doug & Tina, and Pamela.

Tina is a world class chef and we eat like royalty every time we are together. Salmon and pesto on puff pastry with butternut mac and cheese, a magnificent salad and wine of course.

A fantastic night. Tanya, Doug, Pamela, Tina:

“Other Things”

These are things we do not want to talk about. I believe that if we ignore things they go away, Tanya does not. Well hurricane Sandy is barreling up the east coast and is forecast to make a left turn and ruin our time here in DC.

The mud here in the channel is very soft and a storm anchor would be nice. I wish we had a storm anchor, like this one:

Oh wait, actually we do have a storm anchor exactly like this one! Tanya’s father gave us this 80 pound storm anchor for a bon voyage gift and it disassembles into three pieces for easy storage. At the time the topic of conversation revolved around “hoping you never need it but good to know you have it.” Well two months into our cruising life we do in fact need it! It’s very easy to assemble and we deployed it this afternoon in preparation for Sandy’s arrival. We brought it out on the foredeck, lifted our primary anchor, swapped the chain to the storm anchor and dropped it over the side. The anchor set instantly, we backed down on it several times and left the boat in reverse for several minutes, she did not move an inch. I think the rode (chain/rope) would snap before the anchor would drag.

We wanted a picture of the splash as she entered the water but there was just too much going on at the time! It was a nice splash though!

Can’t thank you enough Bob!
