Stuff

More “stuff” happening. As I stated yesterday our fuel tank is on the way, and it actually arrived! Tanya has been finishing the electric/electronics panel and I have been inspecting the chain plates.

Old Dominion Freight Line handed the tank to Portland Air Freight. Great communication from FMT, OD, and PAF. Lots of phone calls and the driver showed up on time:

New tank:

New tank, old tank:

If you own a Pearson 424 and need a new fuel tank, use the model number from our tank and save yourself some time. Our tank is 82 gallons and has a second pick up and return (for the generator). I measured the tank and it’s absolutely perfect!

We are inspecting the chain plates, some were good, others not so good:

We clean them up, spray them with red die, clean them again, then spray developer on them to identify any cracks. We found several with hair line cracks:

Tanya has been hard at work on the electric/electronics panel. The panel is stained, varnished, now she is drilling the holes to mount the panels and electronics:

We are really happy with http://floridamarinetanks.com/ for their great service!!! We contacted FMT almost a month ago and ordered our fuel tank. We went back and forth several times with drawings and additional requirements, they made all the changes we wanted, they were great! We were told the tank would take a minimum of four weeks…three weeks later we received our new tank!

Stay tuned!

Still Here, Still At It…

We are still at it, whittling away at our giant list of projects. Bob has most of the wiring done or mapped out waiting on parts. Most of the autopilot is done, the inverter charger is in. Starting on the water maker. I am still working on refrigeration. Tanya has been working on the wood. She cut out a new panel for the electrical and electronics above the nav station, it looks great. We have a coat of stain on the panel tonight and we will varnish it tomorrow. We removed the pedestal for paint and rebuild. We have been told the windlass will be back next week. We got a call to let us know they’re delivering our new fuel tank tomorrow.

Cutting out the new panel which will go above the nav station:

The main electrical panel will go in the large opening. We will also put a color display, lighting panel, and the remote monitor for the inverter/charger.

We ordered these two ice box lids from www.rparts.com, they’re great and they fit perfectly!

Trimming up the insulation for the underside of the ice box lids:

Bob starting the mock up to mount the water maker pressure vessels:

It’s pretty dark in our storage compartments so we have been installing these little LED lights:

Pedestal is out:

This was in rough shape, like all the rest of the original 33 year old equipment. We are going to awlgrip it, rebuild it and reinstall:

Don’t go away, we get our fuel tank tomorrow!

We’re Still Here!

It’s been a few days since our last update but we are still here working. We are plugging along, working almost every day, making progress. We are still working on thru hulls, moving some, eliminating others. Bob started working on the autopilot, the rudder reference unit and compass are installed. We removed the autopilot drive motor, rewired it and reinstalled. We installed ventilation in the generator and engine areas. Tanya has been working on the instruments, among other things. We’re making progress with the fridge. We had the muffler welded to fit the generator. We are also rebuilding our expensive LED interior lights which have started to fail after seven months of intermittent use. And as always…refinishing the wood…

Still working on thru hulls:

Thanks Sis:

Dad grinding on the hull:

Repositioned cockpit bilge pump outlets from way down on the stern to upper outboard area:

Opening up the autopilot motor, most of the wiring was old, unused and disconnected:

Rewired and ready for installation:

Generator ventilation. This fan will pull hot air out of the compartment:

This fan will bring fresh air into the generator compartment for the diesel engine intake and the actual generator intake. Once we install the chain plates and finish up in there, we will install the ventilation ducting:

These two fans will do the same for the engine compartment. Fresh air in, hot air out. We are waiting until all work is done in there before we install the duct work:

Tanya has been hard at work mounting the instruments:

Fantastic job:

Looks great!

Chart plotter:

Simrad NSE 8:

Still plugging away at the fridge. The fridge project is turning out to be overwhelming, I really underestimated the amount of time and effort required for this project. It’s coming along. Dividing wall is in, freezer on left, fridge on right:

Two part epoxy primer, I’ll paint it white tomorrow:

We opted for a Frigoboat keel cooled system. We have been working with Mark of Great Water Inc. in Brunswick ME. Here is our custom bent evaporator plate that Mark made up for us this morning. I dropped it in as soon as we got back, it fits perfectly! Thanks Mark!

We decided to reuse our old engine muffler for the generator but it was 1/4 inch to large. We took the muffler to a local shop and had the intake downsized and re-angled to better fit the generator. It came out perfect:

We have been trying to decide what to do with our interior lights. We bought some nice LED red/white lights and they worked well but only for a short time. After about seven months of intermittent use they all started to fail. Instead of replacing the lights we are gutting them and installing sockets and LED bulbs for a fraction of the cost. We are also changing from red to blue for night lighting. More on this when our parts arrive:

Don’t go away, more later!

Chain Plates

The rigging attaches to the chain plates, the rigging holds up the masts. So, we removed all of the chain plates for inspection.  We were pretty sure the plates are original and looking at them I think we were right. Anyway, they look pretty rough, one looks a little like a rotini noodle:

We’ll see what the experts say…

Update

We’ve been pretty busy as usual. Tanya has been hard at work cleaning and sanding all the interior wood trim. The previous owners preferred to oil the teak and after decades of oiling it felt pretty sticky and messy. She is doing a great job, the wood looks better than we ever expected! We have also been digging into the electrical. We have pulled yards of wire and other electrical items off the boat. The wiring is really coming along nicely. Bob has been working on the generator installation and today it finally came together! Before the generator went in we positioned the muffler and water heater, replaced the old seacock, and removed/cleaned up the wiring in the locker. We also got around to building our fresh water manifold that will allow us to select and direct where our fresh water comes from and goes to.

Cleaned and sanded waiting to be varnished:

Electrical after:

Generator pan:

Port locker, water heater in place:

New seacock:

Starting the generator install:

After so much work, generator is sitting in the pan:

Perfect!

A very productive day!!
