Installing

We are installing things, sort of. We want to reposition things so we are making mock ups to see how or if they will fit. We are moving the water heater from under our bed out to the cockpit locker, the generator will go right behind it. Both of these will go up through the engine/fuel tank area and into the locker. Bob and Tanya are doing a great job!

Tanya, just after moving the water heater through the engine area, handing it off to her Father:

She’s impressive!

Mock up of the water heater and generator muffler in the cockpit locker, perfect:

New Engine

We ordered a new engine, a Beta Marine 60. The BM 60 is a Kubota based engine and ours will have a Velvet Drive 71C transmission. This is what it will look like:

We’ll take pictures when we receive and install it.

Batteries

In your home you just flick a switch and power from the local power grid activates whatever you need, we don’t have that luxury. Our power, which we need to run almost everything on the boat, will come from batteries. We want lots of power, or storage, to run our things so we bought HUGE batteries.

The new batteries will not fit so we have to “modify” the current battery boxes. Once I dug into it, I found the wood in one box was rotten and had to be removed, no problem. The other box had to be opened up and reenforced for the larger battery (more pictures when I’m done). It’s actually going quite well:

We drove to RAE Battery in Connecticut to pick up our new batteries. We met the owner Roy Earley, very nice guy! Everyone was great to work with and everything was ready when we arrived, very refreshing. They loaded the batteries onto our trailer, we fastened them down and took off back to Maine:

Almost two feet long, 18 inches tall, 318 pounds each, 820 amp hours, that’s power!!!!!

Now we need the crane to come back to install them!

Fuel Tank Out

We’ve been busy, we are still tearing things out. Actually were in transition mode, we’re at a point where we are tearing things out and installing/building things at the same time. We can’t wait to be done breaking things but every time we touch something we find two other things that need to be fixed…

Well the fuel tank is out and officially on order. Once we removed the bottom of the cradle it slipped right out onto the engine beds:

Once out of the cradle we tipped it up on its side so it will fit through the companionway:

The removal process was not pretty, actually it was postponed for a day until we could get more help, but finally:

…more to follow…

Refrigeration

Another project of ours is to upgrade the refrigeration. We have a ten cubic foot ice box that we are going to divide into two sections, one freezer and the other will be a fridge. First we will add insulation and then we will install a new refrigeration system. The box is odd shaped to better fit into the boat so we have to measure and cut the insulation and interior pieces. Once everything is cut and properly fit into place, we will remove it all and glue in the pieces one by one. Once the insulation and liner are in place we will add a divider and the new system. It will take some time.

Ice box opening in the counter top. We’re going to open this up and make two doors. For now we have to reach down into this hole and take the measurements:

Once we take the measurements we draw it out on the insulation:

Then cut out the pieces:

Most of the pieces will have to be cut up even smaller to fit through the opening, something like a puzzle:

Great job!

We’re heading South on Monday to pick up the house batteries and meet the engine dealer. We will update more in a few days!
